A. About Kyoto

Nickname: City of Ten Thousand Shrines

Kyoto served as Japan's capital and the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868 and is considered the country's cultural capital, containing an immense number of extraordinary temples, shrines, and gardens. Among the best known of these are Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji, and the Kiyomizu-dera, with its spectacular views over the city.

Spared from earthquakes and the onslaught of the Second World War and having opted for clean industry, Kyoto has retained its architectural integrity.

Best Things to do in Kyoto

The Good:

The city scores high in cleanliness, safety, and sights and offers a solid pedestrian zone (mainly Teramachi and Shinkyogoku-dori and parts of the Gion district).

The Not-So-Good:

Kyoto has a relatively high price level, and you must expect rather harsh weather most of the year.

# Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine 7 3.5 out of 5 stars

The main reason most tourists visit this particularly important Shinto shrine is to explore the mountain trails with its spectacular rows of close to 10,000 red and orange lacquered torii gates.

The custom to donate a torii started to spread in the Edo period in the 17th century. Furthermore, several of the shrine buildings themselves are remarkable.
