At the center of Saint Petersburg’s impressive main square stands the 47.5 meters high Alexander Column, which is surrounded by numerous elegant historic buildings. Most notably the green and white Winter Palace and the yellow and white General Staff Building (now both part of the Hermitage Museum).

# Peter and Paul Cathedral and Fortress 7 

The stunning Peter and Paul Fortress was constructed in 1703 on an island in the shape of a hexagram with six great bastions as one of the very first buildings in St Petersburg.

The Peter and Paul Cathedral with its impressive gold-painted spire with a height of 123 meters (404 ft) is one of the most famous landmarks of the city.

# State Russian Museum 6 

Focusing on Russian art from ancient church icons to 20th-century paintings this massive museum complex houses a magnificent collection. Most of it is displayed in the Mikhailovsky Palace.

# Yusupov Palace (Moika Palace) 6 

Famous as the scene of the assassination of Grigory Rasputin in 1916, this opulent palace was once home to the incredibly wealthy Yusupov family and has remarkably retained many of its interiors from the 19th century.

# Nevsky Prospekt 6 

The majority of St. Petersburg's tourist attractions, shopping, and nightlife are all situated on or adjacent to this famous boulevard, regarded as the Russian Champs-Élysées.

The avenue starts at the foot of the Admiralty building near the Neva River and runs in a perfectly straight line around 4.5 km (2.7 miles) to Moscow station.

# Fabergé Museum 6 

This privately-owned museum, located inside the extravagant 18th century Shuvalov Palace, was established by Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg in 2013.

The museum's main showpieces are a collection of nine Imperial Easter eggs created by Fabergé for the last two Russian Tsars.
