A. About Cairo

Nickname: The City of a Thousand Minarets

The fascinating megacity of Cairo is situated on the banks of the Nile River at the doorsteps to the incredible pyramids of Giza.

The capital of Egypt is home to The Museum of Egyptian Antiquitiesone of the greatest museums in the world, soon to be partly replaced by the new Grand Egyptian Museum.

Apart from all its ancient treasures, Cairo is also home to trendy modern neighborhoods like Zamalek and Heliopolis.

The Good:

Apart from the pyramids, Cairo holds an abundance of other great sights, is very affordable and the climate (except in midsummer) is also excellent.

Furthermore, situated on the mighty Nile River, Cairo enjoys an impressive location and is one of the largest cities in the world.

The Not-So-Good:

Cairo is above all extremely noisy, chaotic, and dirty. Therefore, the rating for cleanliness is low and the "ease of travel" is not as good as in other cities.

Furthermore, the capital of Egypt is not very safe, and the public transport isn't great. Most of the time your best option to navigate the metropolis is to take an Uber-Taxi or similar services. At least these are very affordable.

As for pedestrian zones, Cairo is quite hard to rate.

In Coptic Cairo and around Al-Muizz li-Din Allah Street as well as the neighboring Khan al-Khalili there are great and extended pedestrian areas. But in the rest of the city, the experience for pedestrians remains extremely poor. Often you have to cross dangerous streets with no red lights or without real pavement. Given the circumstances, the rating for pedestrian zones is a mere 5/10.
