Table of Contents
A. About Ghent
Nickname: Medieval ManhattanBy the 13th century, the second biggest city in Europe after Paris, today Ghent still proudly highlights abundant interesting historic sights and fascinating museums, picturesque canals, and bridges.
In contrast to nearby Bruges, Ghent is very lively and festive and not overrun by tourists.
Furthermore, absolutely don’t miss the chance to appreciate one of the first and most famous oil paintings in the world—the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers.
➕ The Good
First of all, Ghent enjoys a fantastic location at the confluence of the River Lys and the Scheldt River and crisscrossed by picturesque canals.
Moreover, the city possesses a huge pedestrian core and is remarkably clean and safe.
Finally, the public transportation system is excellent, and you can expect welcoming people.
Therefore, it is little wonder that so many visitors come away so impressed by Ghent.
➖ Negative Aspects
Ghent is most importantly expensive.
In addition, the city is small when it comes to size.

In total, we count thirty sights in Ghent. The following sights contribute to a score of 6.15/10 in this highly important category:

Most importantly, the majestic Saint Bavo Cathedral is home to the Ghent Altarpiece (entitled The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb) painted by Hubert and Jan van Eyck c. 1425–1432, one of the world’s first and undoubtedly most influential oil paintings in the world.
Consult any chronological art history book, and you will certainly notice the apparent difference between the almost photorealistic Ghent Altarpiece and all earlier paintings. In addition, the view from the top of the tower is spectacular.
